Report: Amazon planning to release new Alexa devices, including a microwave

Amazon.com Inc. is doubling down again on its Alexa-everywhere strategy, according to a report today that the e-commerce giant is planning to release a range of new Alexa-enabled devices — even an Alexa-powered microwave oven.

CNBC, quoting an “internal document describing the plans,” says that Amazon plans to release, among others, a microwave, an amplifier, a receiver, a subwoofer and an in-car gadget — all enabled with Amazon’s artificial-intelligence-driven digital assistant, but only some with Alexa built-in.

The microwave is getting the majority of the headlines and rightfully so, since it will be the first time Amazon has entered the home appliance market. The microwave will put Amazon head-to-head with the General Electric Co., which already offers a smart microwave, itself Alexa-enabled.

Alexa-enabled amplifiers, receivers and subwoofers are not much of a stretch from the company’s existing lineup of smart home speakers. One ongoing criticism of Amazon’s Echo, Dot and related smart speakers is that their sound quality isn’t great, whereas smart speakers by Sonos Inc., Google LLC’s Home Max and even Apple Inc.’s HomePod offer high-fidelity sound, though with a price to match.

What the “in-car gadget” wasn’t described, but the report noted that Garmin Ltd. currently offers an Alexa-enabled dash cam. Given the massive number of dash cams currently on the market and Amazon’s push into amplifiers and other audio products, the in-car gadget could possibly be a smart stereo instead.

Google and Apple have so far dominated the smart car stereo market, and although there are a number of Alexa-enabled smart car stereos on the market, this is a missing link for Amazon in its the Alexa-everywhere strategy. An affordable Amazon Fire car stereo with accompanying speaker options might find a reasonable audience and at the very least would give Amazon diehards the options as well.

According to the report, Amazon is expected to reveal at least some of the devices later this month.
