Google Home Mini tops smart home speaker sales as market continues to grow
Google LLC now has the best-selling smart home speaker on the market as its Google Home Mini topped sales charts in the second quarter, according to new stats from Strategy Analytics.
Following a trend first indicated in the first quarter, Amazon.com Inc.’s market share continued to fall, coming in 41 percent. But its devices were well-represented. Meanwhile, Apple Inc. once again failed to make the top five devices list.
The Google Home Mini sold 2.3 million units in the quarter for a 20 percent market share, while Amazon’s Echo Dot and Echo sat in second and third place with 2.2 million and 1.4 million units, respectively.
Breaking the American hegemony of the top five, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.’s Tmall Genie sat in fourth place with 800,000 units, the same number as the Google Home in fifth place.
Apple’s HomePod came in sixth with about 600,000 units sold, the same number as in the last quarter. But it now accounts for 70 percent of the premium $200-plus smart home speaker market and 16 percent of all revenue in the market as well.
“The number of smart speaker models available worldwide has grown significantly over the last 12 months as vendors look to capitalize on the explosive market growth,” David Mercer, vice president at Strategy Analytics said in a statement. “Heavyweight brands such as Samsung and Bose are in the process of launching their first models, adding further credibility to the segment and giving consumers more options at the premium end of the marker.”
While the devices are still a relatively small market, overall shipments in the quarter came in at 11.7 million units, up from 9.2 million units in the first quarter, a 21 percent jump. As Mercer noted, with more options coming into the market at varying price points, including a range of smart accessories such as Amazon’s smart subwoofer, the market is poised for continued growth.
