Oracle buys SD-WAN company Talari Networks
Oracle Corp. said today it’s acquiring a software-defined wide area network company called Talari Networks Inc. in order to build out its cloud and networking businesses.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Talari’s main product is its Failsafe technology, which is an SD-WAN platform used to connect enterprise networks such as branch offices and data centers over large geographic distances. WAN connections traditionally required special proprietary hardware, but the SD-WAN movement does away with this by moving network control into the cloud using a software approach.
Talari’s Failsafe SD-WAN is said to provide greater reliability and security for site-to-site and site-to-cloud connectivity and application access over any IP network. Oracle said it’s planning to use the technology to boost its own Session Border Controller and network management infrastructure, which is used to secure and manage the flow of data across fixed and mobile IP networks.
“The importance of networks is often underestimated when enterprises deploy next-generation applications, from a performance, security and reliability perspective,” said Holger Mueller, principal analyst and vice president of Constellation Research Inc. “Vendors like Oracle that want to get these workloads need to constantly innovate to keep their underlying network infrastructure modern and competitive. Today this means that the network infrastructure has to be software defined, and CxOs can expect Talari to strengthen Oracle’s load-specific network performance.”
Talari, which was founded in 2009 and has received $53.5 million in venture capital funding, currently boasts more than 500 customers including public sector, financial services, insurance, retail and manufacturing firms. The goods news for them is that Talari’s products and services won’t be shuttered any time soon, Oracle has promised.
Oracle’s wallet has been dented by a series of acquisitions in recent weeks. Just last month it said it was acquiring DataFox Inc., a San Francisco-based startup that provides sales intelligence for business-to-business companies. Also last month, Oracle snapped up a company called goBalto Inc., which sells a cloud platform for managing clinical trials.
Oracle said the Talari deal will close before the end of the year, when it will be integrated into its Oracle Communications business unit.
