Tibco acquires master data management provider Orchestra Networks
Tibco Software Inc. today announced that it has acquired Orchestra Networks SA, a data management provider focused on helping enterprises get their vast, and often fragmented, information troves under control.
The acquisition is the latest in a series of deals struck by the company over the past few quarters. Previously, Tibco picked up application integration provider Scribe Software Inc. and acquired a unit of Cisco Systems Inc. that made tools for managing data spread out over multiple systems.
The deals are part of the growth strategy that the data and application integration giant has pursued since it was taken private by Vista Equity Partners in 2014.
Tibco didn’t disclose the terms of the Orchestra acquisition, but a source told Reuters that it’s valued in the low nine figures. The firm’s customer base is likely a big part of the reason why it fetched such a price. More than a hundred enterprises, including Citigroup Inc., Paramount Pictures Corp. and Burger King Corp., use Orchestra’s flagship EBX software.
EBX is a so-called master data management platform that can make information from different systems accessible via a single pane of glass. There are several reasons why a company might want to consolidate its records this way.
For starters, administrators gain the ability to ensure that all the stakeholders who rely on a given dataset have access to the most up-to-date version. EBX also makes it possible to filter inaccurate information and centrally set policies for who is allowed to view what. The users who consume the information, in turn, can do so via a unified interface instead of having to manually interact with several different data sources.
The acquisition will bolster both Tibco’s data management portfolio and its lineup of application tools. That’s because EBX not only centralizes access to records but also provides development features that enable companies to plug in their internal applications.
“Now, organizations can create fully configurable, data-centric applications on the fly, such as self-service applications to manage data across departmental spreadsheets, that simplify change management and eliminate long and costly development projects,” Tibco said in a statement.
To support these kinds of use cases better, the company might integrate EBX with its Cloud Live Apps service, which enables regular business workers to cobble together business applications. Tibco could potentially also connect the software with its analytics tools to ease data access for analysts.
