Apple reportedly readying dark mode, multitasking features for iOS 13
The next version of iOS will be a major boon for power users, if a new leak is to be believed.
A report published today in 9To5Mac cites “people familiar with the development of the operating system” as saying that Apple Inc. is planning to deliver a new set of productivity and multitasking features with the release. Some will reportedly become available on all iOS devices, while others will be specific to the iPad.
One of the most notable rumored additions is support for multiple app tabs. The feature, which the tipsters said is coming only to the iPad, will let users not just open several panels inside an application but also detach them into standalone windows. Tabs will reportedly be stacked atop one another to let users quickly toggle between them and close panels they no longer need.
Other than the multiple-tab support, it seems most of the other planned productivity features are set to come to the iPhone as well. Among the reported additions is a systemwide “dark mode” designed to reduce eye strain at night and a revamped undo mechanism.
Currently, reverting a change in an iOS app requires users to shake their devices. Apple is said to be readying a more natural setup that will make it possible undo changes by tapping the virtual keyboard with three fingers and then swiping to the left. According to the tipsters, there will also be a redo option that will be activated when users swipe right.
A related enhancement believed to be in the works alongside the undo function is multifield selection support. The 9To5Mac report indicates that iOS 13 will introduce the ability to select several items, for example fields in a spreadsheet, at once, which should greatly simplify basic actions like copy-pasting for business users who regularly work with data.
Some of the default iOS apps are expected to receive upgrades as well. The Mail app will organize messages into categories such as travel, marketing and purchases, while Safari will be updated to fix a common issue whereby websites load pages in iPhone size on iPads.
Apple typically unveils new versions of iOS during its Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
