That is so true about putting things out on the internet with the understanding it will be, well, stolen. I've had a tribute website to a celebrity essentially stolen once, and just recently I found some photos used to illustrate a creative story were taken and used as part of one of those quiz sites. I just laughed at that one.

Being a backwoods artist who creates things for kicks once in a blue moon, I've not had my things plagiarized. To be honest, I don't mind people taking my work, as long as they take the five minutes to ask, and save both of us from having to drag you to court.

I posted a few pictures on my blog when I was doing an article on an artist I like, and I made a point of learning enough Japanese to ask for her permission. XD

Copyright and intellectual property right infringement seems to be the least punished crime in the world, once you take the MPAA and RIAA out of the equation. I could, if pressed, point to at least two successful companies (fully funded and everything) off the top of my head that built their entire existence around stealing content and reposting it within the original context and in totality.

It all depends on the positioning and how well liked you are whether or not there is even a stigma attached to what you do when you steal others' work and content. Accountability for said activity doesn't even seem to enter into it most of the time.

I put out everything I do on the internet with the understanding and assumption that if it's any good at all, someone will steal, reuse it, bend it, fold it or otherwise mutilate it.

Pictures, words it doesn't matter, if it is on the net it can potentially be exploited. I read where a woman placed a picture of her infant son online and another nefarious person used it for an adoption scam. Even copyrighted pieces become fodder for spinners. It is a gamble that seems to pay off-for the bad guys anyway

What I agree with is that we have done it to ourselves. There's a very old internet saying that says once something is uploaded, it's there forever. If you do anything in cyberspace, it could potentially come back to haunt you, and it amazes me what people upload.
