Google Releases a Programming Language

image I just got an announcement from Google regarding something that sounds really groundbreaking – the release of a new programming language.  They’re calling it Go.

I’d love to give you some deep analysis of what this means or the quality of the language, but I haven’t had time to really pour over the codex and see what it’s all about yet.

Here’s the announcement I got, and the accompanying video:

Here at Google, we believe programming should be fast, productive, and, most importantly, fun. That’s why we’re excited to open source an experimental new language called Go. Go attempts to combine the development speed of working in a dynamic language like Python with the performance and safety of a compiled language like C or C++. In our experiments with Go to date, typical builds feel instantaneous; even large binaries compile in just a few seconds. And the compiled code runs close to the speed of C. Go is designed to let you move fast.

Update: Here’s the post about it on Google’s open source blog.

Essentially, and without really pausing to examine the nooks and crannies of this, the implication will be that it’ll be a lot easier (or at least a lot more efficient) to write for Google’s public cloud.

I’ll see if that assumption holds true after I have a chance to try it out.
