Predictions 2010: Kevin Purcer’s List

[Editor’s Note: A number of SiliconANGLE community members, readers and contributors are just too darn busy to sit down to write several hundred words on what last year held for them and what tech trends they see emerging in 2010. As such, I’ve offered to sit down and do a ten minute interview with anyone who feels like they have something to share in the way of 2010 predictions (including you! Join this group and leave a note for me in the forums).

Late last week, I had a chance to sit down with Kevin Purcer, the , Director of Interactive Services of Erwin-Penland (a creative agency out of South Carolina).  We talked for about ten minutes on the Android platform, online TV Content, augmented reality and social media. Below are the bullet points for our discussion and the video embed. To download the conversation, grab this MP4. –mrh]

… on the Android Platform

I do think next year will be an interesting year for the android platform. With all the planned devices we’ll see how much (if at all) it changes the game. Maybe mobile will be the next “social media.” I’m already seeing signs of it starting to happen.

… on Online Network TV Content

The other things I’m looking forward to in 2010 are developments in online network TV content distribution. The percentage of people watching network TV via a computer in their living room is still tiny but devices like Boxee’s set top box may be inching us closer. IMO it is better than TiVo.

If the percentages start to increase, I think there will be a resurgence in video ad buys since the targeting systems could develop significantly. I don’t think we will get there next year, but I am excited to see how much closer we’ll come.

[Editor’s Note: We also dove into, quite extensively, the lag time we think will exist between mainstream TV content and the indie producers like Leo Laporte and Revision3 on down to folks like me and you. –mrh]

… on Augmented Reality

imageAs far as augmented reality goes, I see the potential, I just haven’t seen it done really well yet. There either isn’t enough content, the geotags aren’t accurate enough, or some other thing is getting in the way of the apps being actually more useful than a simpler version. Plus, who wants to walk around looking through their phone to see the world? Call me when it is built in to my sunglasses, or better yet, contact lenses.

… on Social Media

Honestly, you caught me at sort of a cynical time when it comes to social media. I’d be happy to discuss why [Editor’s Note: he does. Watch the video already. –mrh]. I’m hoping next year will be a little better for this topic.
