Dean over at Venturebeat has a good piece on Scott. Scott was a cool guy and many in Silicon Valley and around the computer business loved SUN.

Dean writes:
"It is appropriate that McNealy is selling his company to another valley icon, Oracle CEO Larry Ellision. It makes me feel like this is one general surrendering his sword to another."

Ckenton: i agree - Sun was facing certain death now the body parts get transplanted into Oracle. Oracle and Sun can do some damage together if they can nail the integration. On the talent that will be leaving in droves.. Early stage startup activity will be booming. Sun has ton of expertise that will translate into our world of distributed computing which will impact social web and cloud computing big time - and of course the datacenter reengineering efforts taking place.

Exciting time for innovation there.

Scott: Of course Scott didn't fail. I was teasing out a bigger picture. He achieved a personal success money and glory building up that startup. My perspective is more company legacy and there the facts are undisputable. Sun dies at 28.

I've followed Sun from their inception. Love them and hate'm for doing amazing shit then f'ing it up.

Scott was a maverick and he made tons of money for employees and investors (and himself). My perspective is that the Sun founders let it go and they didn't see it through - that's my perspective on this.

Of course he made a ton of money but unlike Bill and Dave at Hewlett-Packard he and his founders didn't build a sustainable company. On the glory he ran out of that years ago.

It's to bad. I liked Scott.

"This is a very powerful merger. And way better than some of the alternatives we were facing." Just about sums it up.

John, McNeally "failed?" Really? I think you need to find a way to get some perspective.

Sad to see them go, I did about a year there (iPlanet) and two years at SGI. Two stories are somewhat similar.
I remember Sun went to great lengths to dump on Linux as note enterprise ready. They dumped on Intel in favor of Sparc.
Then they started selling both. It's not like they didn't try. Being on the inside and seeing how things were done there, well I'm not surprised. Not a bad run overall Scott, that much I agree on.
