I total agree with you especially on the metadata part and networking innovation. I edited out the networking part because the interview would have been very long. I'm going to put that up when I get back from Barcelona or maybe sooner. Simon talked at great lengths about the opportunities for startups or smaller players to challenge the incumbents. This is why I'm very interested in the open innovation trend. Specifically the position Juniper and Cisco are taking - one is open and one is closed. If Juniper ando/or others can harness the developer community they might be able to pull a "judo" move on Cisco.

I do agree with Simon on:
The delivery of the applications is all about the successful and correctly deploying and aligning and assuring the availability of resources for the entire application. People have to get out of the notion of single machine mindset and into the concept of an application as a unitary thing that gets managed though its’ lifecycle of the infrastructure.
. Proliferation of all kinds of scripted automation and lack of uniform or cohesive way to characterize the application and its operating environment characteristics lead to tying up the application to the hardware. Metadata will liberate applications from the Iron and Network; provides comprehensive metrics/metadata about the applications and its environment enabling it much smarter than ever before.

As Simon stated, Networking is going to be another interesting area open for innovation and game changer opportunities.
