Nokia and Intel Join Forces for 3D Mobile Device Features

US-based Intel and Finland’s Nokia have joined hands in research and development, to take communication to a whole new level. The development laboratory is located in northwestern coast of Finland hosted by the University of Oulu. According to Intel, the research lab will employ dozens of research and development professionals.

One of the reasons behind this joint venture is perhaps Nokia’s alarming 40% sales drop, losing ground to it’s closest rival, Apple, according to its quarterly report as of July this year.  For the most part, Nokia is not keeping up with the pace of the demands of contemporary consumers as much Apple’s iPhone has been able to.  This could be a contributing factor for Nokia’s purchase of Motally, to provide mobile browsing and in-app tracking and reporting. The tracking tools will be incorporate to its Symbian platform.
Intel is also serious in it’s expansion  of its security service offerings as it planned on purchasing McAfee at $7.7 billion cash. Intel is aware of the increasing demands for security for both hardware and software as cloud-storage (on the mobile end, too), remote access and consumer-driven media sharing through open networks are getting more and more popular. McAfee is  one of the big names in the security area and an even bigger one in mobile security.

Nokia, stil one of the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturers, and Intel, a computer chip bigwig, have come to a consensus of working on mobile phone interfaces to make virtual interaction “more natural and intuitive, in the same way that modern games and movies are more immersive through the use of realistic 3-D graphics.” They also open up a research possibility of 3D projection of the person you’re talking to on your phone.

What could only happen in sci-fi movies may very well come to life now, as these two technological luminaries animate the possibility of a virtual reality through the development of holograms to make the conversation more natural and real-time via mobile phones. Welcome to the future.
