TweetDeck Updates, Supports Posterous, Twitter URL Shortener, and More

TweetDeck, the popular desktop client for managing your Twitter, has released an update for the tool today. The latest version, TweetDeck v0.35, isn’t a major overhaul, but show’s the company’s dedication to including some oft-requested features. It’s just the desktop version being updated today, as TweetDeck’s blog notes,

“In this release we have, of course, fixed a few bugs, but there are also some small, but important, new features. Oh, and we are talking about the normal version of TweetDeck here, not the super-swanky User Streams Preview version. That will be updated soon.”

The new features include a section for trending topics from WhatTheTrend, support for Twitter’s t.co URL shortener (an upcoming default across the board), and the option to send photos directly to Posterous. If you have a Google Buzz account, you’ll also be able to write tweets longer than 140 characters. Among TweetDeck’s other recent updates this year is support for real-time streams.

What’s interesting about the small feature updates is that they’re primarily centered around other third-party apps and tools. Plixi, formerly known as TweetPhoto, has shifted its direction to become more inclusive beyond Twitter. It’s all indicative of many Twitter apps’ behavior, especially as Twitter continues to roll out its own updates, closing in the gaps.

Twitter’s recently launched iPad app, for instance, had an emphasis on user interface design–something TweetDeck is known for. The added Posterous support is one of the more notable features in this update, particularly as Posterous is seeking expansion through partnerships and shared support with other blogging and microblogging tools.
