Motorola Inc. has acquired a software firm Aloqa GmbH. Motorola, which has been actively regaining a foothold, particularly around Android devices, should have some interesting plans for the software incorporation ahead. Aloqa is a Munich based software firm specialized in developing location based services.
The financial terms have not been disclosed. However, it has been mentioned that Aloqa will join the Motorola Mobility Division, and will assist in the development of MOTOBLUR. From Motorola,
“Aloqa is an exciting addition to Motorola Mobility as its specialized engineering talent and location-tracking technology will significantly accelerate the release of our context-aware mobile services platform,” said Christy Wyatt, corporate vice president of software and services product management for Motorola Mobility. “Aloqa’s core technologies, user database, and specialized skills are a strong fit with our planned server-side context delivery architecture and will further enhance Motorola’s MOTOBLURTM capabilities. We welcome Aloqa’s highly skilled personnel to the Motorola Mobility team.”
This is a very intriguing development, as it points towards the future of the mobile industry. A smart phone manufacturer’s acquisition of a location based services software development company doesn’t say a lot about Motorola’s specific goals, but this could go in a number of directions. Location awareness is something that can be applied to a number of applications, social networks and advertising. Seeing a manufacturer get in on ground level could lead to some very deep integration for handset users. As Motorola also looks to launch its own Android tablet next year, we’ll be keeping an eye on Motorola’s developments.
