VMware is launching an app for the iPad, thus, making the already mobile and accessible Cloud services available on the go. The announcement was made by Steve Herrod, VMware’s CTO, at the company’s VMworld Europe conference. The addition of an iPad app to the client tool package for VCenter, is part of the company’s strategy to target the mobile space and provide more tools for clients.
The basic application (for monitoring status and alerts only) will be complete and ready for download by the end of the year. And shortly after, newer versions with control capabilities would be launched. The company plans to bring mobile version of the View application. Moreover, they are also interested in developing applications for the Android platform later on. The company’s mobile plans don’t end here. They have their eyes set on full virtualiziation via mobile devices.
PCWorld reports :
VMware had to learn the hard way that developing a bare-metal hypervisor that runs directly on smartphones is not the way to go. It limited the number of devices on which mobile virtualization could be made available, Steve Herrod [ CTO, VMware] said. VMware has been late to the game in the mobile space, but Herrod said enterprises should expect a lot more announcements going forward. The company has seen the same growing interest in mobile as everybody else and now has a team in place to look at this area, he said.
VMware is not alone on their quest to increase accessibility of Cloud Management features. Rackspace, a cloud hosting service, has also been aggressive on the mobile front. The advancement in hand-held device technology helps in bringing these new innovations. This will eventually help in promoting the Cloud Computing Technology even further. The added ease of access will only bring in more clients for the company. However, it also raises concerns about security issues and possible hack attacks.
