Adobe AIR 2.5 Bringing Flash to Android, TV, Windows 7 and RIM Tablets

Adobe will enable Flash-based applications and services to work on Android, Blackberry Playbook and Samsung TV, as it announced the development of Adobe Air 2.5.  Along with the preview editions of the next Flex Framework, Adobe’s Flash Builder design and development environment, and the Flash Catalyst design tool, Air 2.5 finalization is expected in 2011.  The news was announced at the Adobe’s annual MAX conference in Los Angeles.

Samsung’s Smart TV is also expected to due next year, with applications built around Flex and Flash tools. Downloads will be available at Samsung TV’s app store. Also, Adobe is currently working on a version that will deliver AIR on the Windows Phone 7, the latest operating system from Windows which just launched this month, according to The Register.

The release spans an array of devices, with a certain penchant for the mobile space.  This does, of course, point to Adobe’s encouragement of mobile developers to enhance the mobile web for browsing capacity.  Adobe’s been particularly able to gain relevancy in this market, thanks to its work on Android’s platform.  Adobe released AIR for Android within the past two weeks, and RIM and Windows merely present more opportunity for Adobe to grow its mobile reach.

Though Steve Jobs have criticized Flash to the point of removing it from the iPad, and strongly advocated HTML5, Adobe still plans to update AIR to work on Apple’s tablet iOS. Adobe will use the native code for the runtime on Apple, while for the other devices, AIR itself is the runtime. Details on when it will be released were not disclosed.
