Alcatel Lucent strikes deals in U.S. and China

After facing difficult periods of readjustment following the merger with Lucent, Alcatel has announced the new contracts signed with important companies in the U.S. and China and the €25 million revenues in comparison with last year’s €182 million loss.

Despite voices saying these earnings are owed to tax benefits created by the economic crisis, Ben Verwaayen, the Alcatel Lucent chief executive, states that the deals worth of $5.7 billion will definitely trigger the company’s development in the following years: “I think this is a significant turning point in the transformation of the company. We are experiencing good demand for our products,” reports The New York Times.

Alcatel Lucent signed deals with Verizon Wireless, the largest mobile telecommunications network in the U.S.  for the production of high-speed wireless networks, capable of transferring data at higher speeds than existing systems thus using a Long Term Evolution technology. This partnership is expected to bring sales of up to $4 billion in the next four years.

Alcatel has also made some acquisitions this year, including OpenPlug, building out its software capabilities and retaining a specialized foothold in the mobile market.

China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom will also sign deals with Alcatel Lucent, the figures of the agreement going up to €1.18 billion.  It’s a major step towards global growth, and gives access to a large expanse for build outs.  The battle of China and the US is going on in th PC world, with Dell ovrtaking HP in sales.
