TiVo just announced its sixth quarterly loss in a row, which is more evidence of bad times for the company. It has reported a net loss of $20.6 million with revenues dropped by 12 per cent to $41.3 million. Tivo’s subscriber base has fallen by 112,000, and the worst part is that it is expecting to lose more in the coming quarters. And we thought Blockbuster was in a rut.
The company lost $6.4 million in Q3 of 2009, which was much less than this year. Moreover, it is expecting the loss of approximately $32 million to $34 million in next quarter with even reduced revenues between $40 million to $42 million.
As dismal as this looks, TiVo’s hopeful for the future. According to TiVo, the changed pricing model that makes the subscribers pay lower upfront, but higher monthly fees has also contributed towards this loss. But they believe it to bring profitability in long-term and negativity in short-term. It is also launching an iPad app within a few weeks that it describes “an an experience that uniquely works in tandem with what you are watching on the television screen.”
Another effort by the company to revive its position is in the form of personalized internet radio via Pandora. In its competition, Boxee Box is also launched by D-link at a competitive price of $199. Vudu, another streaming service that had fallen to the wayside, is making gains though distribution partnerships as PlayStation 3 gets more on-demand video stream options.
