Minorities Hold the Key to Online Growth in 2011

The growth of the US online population will be primarily based on minorities, as these include Hispanics, African Americans, seniors and children, according to a recently released study by eMarketer. A whopping 32.2 million (the fastest growing demographic) Hispanics are forecast to go online, providing nearly 70% of the U.S Hispanic population, as well as 26 million African Americans or 66.9% of the total African American population.

“Marketers who are beginning to up their budgets as they put the recession behind them will do well to remember that minority groups are only increasing in importance online. Advertisers must remember they make up an ever-greater portion of the audience of all media, but spending on Spanish-language and African-American media is also a must.”

The growing minority portion of the online social media and mobile population is expected to stretch all the way beyond 2014. We also covered here that the African American web audience consists of a growing group of young, mobile and social-media savvy female users. The female portion of the market is a very influential one, as women are affecting the mobile advertisement vertical, which has seen significant growth from more aspects than one in the third quarter of 2010.

Online advertising and marketing doesn’t skip the male segment of the online audience, as mobile male shoppers’ coupon usage may have a bright future, at least from a marketer’s perspective.

Going back to the minority online audiences, particularly to mobile audiences, targeted movie ads for the Hispanic and African American audiences are growing in numbers, as well as in importance. With a current ‘stagnating’ overall online US population growth, minority audiences are leading the expansion, as targeted marketing is taking on a bigger and bigger role in mobile as well as social media.
