CloudBees Acquires Stax Networks

CloudBees, an innovation leader in Java cloud computing, announced the successful acquisition of Stax Networks,  a pioneering Java Platform-as-a-Service solutions provider. This acquisition will facilitate the delivery of CloudBees’ own Java PaaS, RUN@cloud and DEV@cloud service. The company will now become a one stop shop for the cloud environment, from the development to production solutions.

“If the recent flurry of acquisitions is anything to go by, PaaS is shaping up to be a contested field in 2011. The Stax cloud application platform enables CloudBees to get a jumpstart on everyone and accelerate our RUN@cloud service to the market. CloudBees is focused on bringing simplicity and ease-of-use back to Java developers with a cloud-native environment that eliminates IT operational headaches. The Stax team has built an incredible offering well ahead of its time that will take us one step closer to our vision,” said Sacha Labourey, founder and CEO of CloudBees.

The integrated RUN@cloud service is built from a combination of Stax’s platform along with existing CloudBees technology, and will roll out January 2011. Also, CloudBees DEV@cloud build system can be used by the developers to develop, test code, and directly publish on RUN@cloud service.  Currently, DEV@cloud is in its beta version and has over 300 users.

“CloudBees and Stax share a common vision for the cloud – namely that the focus has to be on applications, not servers or virtual machines. By combining forces, we will now have a complete application lifecycle offering for the cloud. I’m looking forward to joining a crack team with the resources and track record to take the Stax platform, as RUN@cloud, to a wider audience,” said Spike Washburn, founder and CEO of Stax Networks.

Cloudbees also announced $4 million in funding in its first round of financing. The investment, by Matrix Partners along with participation from individual investors, including JBoss founder Marc Fleury and Bob Bickel. This investment will be used by CloudBees to accelerate the development of its RUN@cloud service.
