Sears and Kmart Launch an Online Movie Download Service

Sonic Solutions, a company that enables digital media from Hollywood to Home, announced the launch of Alphaline Entertainment, an online movie download service running on the RoxioNow platform. The Sonic-Sears partnership involves a multi-phase roll-out which enables a wide array of connected to devices and studio-supported digital programs to access premium online entertainment without compatibility issues. Customers from both Sears and Kmart can avail online the service which covers new movies as soon they release on DVD and Blu-ray disc.

The agreement expands the Roxio Platform to a massive scale of devices from portable media to Blu-ray Disc players, mobile phones and high-definition television sets from brick mortar retailers, leading manufacturers and other vendors, as it integrate services at a chip level.

The Roxio platform contains new movies, next-day TV programs and other kinds of premium content to an ecosystem of home and mobile electronics. RoxioNow-powered stores gives customers the ability to purchase premium entertainment via their favorite devices and, RoxioNow-powered devices at their online library at any time.

Several other video portals have made significant moves to improve their service, as well as companies acquiring video portals to respond to the growing popularity of access to premium content. Redbox, for example, released streaming video rental service, as well as Netflix expanding to Canada. Hulu launched a premium subcription service, and then placed portals to smartphones, wi-fi enabled mobile devices, game consoles, and connected televisions. AOL, whose word this year is “acquisition”, acquires 5 min, online video portal and Studio Now, an online video creation, as well as launched New Ads with Project Devil. Another video portal, Clicker, also adds Facebook-integrated recommendation service for Google TV. Finally, there’s WalMart acquiring Vudu this year, and incorporating the video portal into its retail services.
