A Preview of the Latest from Google Mobile, Android 3.0, Honeycomb

Google’s Android Team has deployed several exciting upgrades over the past week. This includes the release of Nexus S and Android 2.3 Gingerbread, as well as a trip to space. But the excitement doesn’t end there. Today, Android 3.0, Honeycomb, the latest from Google mobile innovation was previewed at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Honeycomb embodies the next version of Android. Its virtual and holographic user interface is designed to work with devices with large screens, tablets to be specific. It features refined multi-tasking, elegant notifications, access to over 100,000 apps on Android Market, home screen customization with a new 3D experience, and redesigned widgets that are richer and more interactive. Web browsers were also updated to support tabbed browsing, form auto-fill, ability to sync with Google Chrome Bookmarks, as well as concealing your identity during private browsing.

Honeycomb works excellently with several other mobile innovations from Google including Google Map 5 with 3D interactions and offline reliability, access to over 3 million Google eBooks, and Google Talk, which now supports video and voice chat with other Google Talk enabled devices, be it PC, tablets and the like.

Also, the newly debuted Motorola XOOM tablet will be powered by Android Honeycomb 3.0, and the combo was demoed at CES yesterday.

“The Xoom will run on Google’s ‘Honeycomb’ version of Android. It will sell through Verizon Wireless as a 3G device in the first quarter, but Mr. Jha said the company plans to introduce a 4G version later on. Customers eventually will be able to take the 3G tablet back to Verizon Wireless stores to get it upgraded to a 4G connection,” according to a Wall Street Journal report.

With all of these announcements, Google still continues to wow the public.
