AboutOne Gives Away the Cloud to Egypt Evacuees

It’s not very often we hear about a cloud company finding ways to help humanity during times of political strive.  AboutOne CEO Joanne Lang announced that they will be offering free subscriptions for the company’s cloud-based services to American expats evacuated from Egypt. The service offers a convenient way to store important information, such as family memories, to the cloud, and have them immediately accessible from anywhere in the world (as long as no one’s flipped the internet kill switch).   This is part of the company’s commitment to charitable giving. They offered the same benefits to Australian flood victims last month.

Lang is a former SAP Labs executive who invested her experience on cloud technology in order to throw out tedious tasks and refocus on efficiency and security. She’s committed to bringing the flexibility, mobility and cost-effectiveness of the cloud from enterprises to families as well.

“As a frequent traveler and former expat, I experienced firsthand the need to access my household information and documents when I was away from home,” says Lang. “Everyone knows it’s prudent to safeguard critical data and documents in case of disaster, yet too few of us actually follow the best practices for doing this. Instead we keep silos of this data in paper files or on home PCs, often failing to perform regular backups. With AboutOne, my goal was to create a tool, accessible anywhere, that expertly handles data security so our customers don’t have to. I want our customers to know that no matter what happens, they’ll be able to access their household information whenever they need it.”

AboutOne’s storage also attracts people from all levels of society, including professionals.

“Although I don’t mean to scare my clients when I talk about preparedness, being organized also means being ready for disaster. AboutOne gives you everything you need to preserve family memories and important household information,” said NAPO Board Member Regina Lark, one of the company’s customers.

“There are plenty of remote backup sites that allow you to store files and documents, but what really sets AboutOne apart is the way it helps you organize your data, documents and family memories so that everything you need is at your fingertips,” said another subscriber, Mandi Ehman.

Egypt has been garnering so much attention from the world caused by the strife between its 30-year tyrant and its citizens. It went as far as shutting down the country’s internet connection. However, this stumbling block didn’t stop the Egyptians from having access to social media, having been able to tweet even without an internet connection via Google, as well as Al-Jazeera’s almost seamless scoop inside the area of contention. Social media proved to be a very powerful tool in such political cataclysm.
