Google’s getting more niche with its search perks every day. Today brings Recipe View, an ongoing effort to contextualize its big data search and retain users who would otherwise turn to other sites. Google’s latest addition to the left-hand Google Search panel lets users to search for recipes without ever leaving the search engine. Initially, only U.S and Japanese users will be able to utilize Recipe View, which seems to cover a particularly broad keyword spectrum.
“To get to Recipe View, click on the “Recipes” link in the left-hand panel when searching for a recipe. You can search for specific recipes like [chocolate chip cookies], or more open-ended topics—like [strawberry] to find recipes that feature strawberries, or even a holiday or event, like [cinco de mayo].”
Recipe View also allows users to search for results by a chef’s name and a detailed description of what they’re looking for (e.g. ‘spicy vegetarian curry with coconut and tofu’, or even ‘strange salad’). Result filtering is also available, with categories including ingredients, cooking time and calorie count.
Google says Recipe View is based on data powered by its rich snippets markup which it introduced back in ’09.
Google is making strides to establish its hold of the market from more aspects than one, and now it has a whole new challenge to face. A Swiss court is to announce its ruling about the matter of Google Street View’s current suspension in Europe next week. Moreover, the internet giant is also facing an interrogation by the EU into its algorithm methods. This scrutiny may translate into very bad news’ for Google’s core business on the long-run, as well as for a facial recognition and social networking visual search results patent it has published in Europe very recently.
