Yahoo Putting MyBlogLog to Rest. Perhaps the Days of Blogging Really are Over.

MyBlogLog was acquired by Yahoo just four years back, and today it’s about to be shut down. The final shut down of this blog community and data widget service will take place on May 24, 2011, according to an email announcement by the parent company.  MyBlogLog has always been a viable blogging platform, but perhaps a tad ahead of its time. It had massive potential and provided service to blog writers and readers.

Ever since its inception, and before acquisition by Yahoo, it worked as a wildly  innovative service that allowed the blog readers and writers a deal to show them the faces of people who read their blog in turn of personal information. This was a really compelling offer and attracted lots of bloggers. The site has a large number of members and the news of an impending shut down is surely going to ruffle some feathers.

Talking about MyBlogLog’s sunset, Eric Marcoulier, co-founder says,

“So much of your company’s long term sucess when it’s acquired is based on the amount of executive juice it has. The only way it survives and flourishes is if you have an executive champion who promotes it internally. Shortly after we were acquired we were transfered away from our champion and under someone who didn’t feel the same way about MyBlogLog. In those circumstances, things simply slow down.”

“For any startup that has earn outs, and this didn’t affect us, you’ve got to keep in mind that in 3 months you could be reorganized and the new guy could shut you down. The picture that gets painted early on when you have your product champions can change in a heartbeat and it’s important for entrepreneurs to consider that when looking at the deal terms.”

This is not the only shut down unit of Yahoo, as it’s closing eight of its sub-sites including Yahoo Picks, AltaVista, Yahoo Bookmarks, Yahoo Buzz, Delicious as well as Yahoo’s traffic APIs. In fact, this is a part of Yahoo’s restructuring-survival strategy.
