Google TV Revamp Makes Android More Media-Centric

The two-day annual developer-focused conference, Google I/O, started yesterday, May 10th. Many IT practitioners are expected to join the event that will be held Google at Moscone Center in San Francisco, California. Breakout sessions will be touching on various topics but will remain within the Android and online video domain. These include presentation on scalable structured markup, Android market developers and memory management for Android and big announcements on new partnerships, acquisitions and remodeling of Google TV.

This is the same season in 2010 when Google TV was launched. With the tagline “TV Meets web and web meets TV”, the giant is looking next to the $70 billion dollar marketing market. However, the outcome of the release was not as good as anticipated. Back in January during CES, despite a hold off from the search engine giant, Sony still paraded its internet TV powered by Google and resulted to an underwhelming reception. The skid continues as Google TV fell short by 72% on its first quarter sales. At the Google I/O today, Google will refurbish the product, outfitting it with a faster chip set and improving the user interface—so, Logitech can now breathe. Some of the issues this revamp will answer include opposition from big network television enterprise and challenge using remote controls. Google TV was initially introduced a year ago with the idea of targeting the 40 billion TV viewers worldwide and $70 billion ad market within the US alone.

Aside from Google TV, Android is also a significant topic at the Google I/O 2011. It is one of the most successful products among the brood and will likely to magnet more attention.  Other developments include next-generation app “Ice Cream Sandwich” opening, as well as movies, music, and Android accessories and the upgrade to Honeycomb 3.1.
