The Big Data Big Bang in Mobile Universe

When we talk about of Big Data, we often look at the companies with high level demands for storage to keep their mounds of information. But what we do not immediately realize is that Big Data in mobile platforms are also exploding, and could be bigger. Imagine how many people around the world have mobile phones, let alone handheld devices. It could actually beat the number of Facebook members by leaps and bounds. In this light, enterprises are wrestling with the skyrocketing amount of data that proliferates into the terabyte, petabyte and zettabyte stage and shapes IT economics. With all these fuzzy haze still surrounding Big Data as an industry, it is no surprise that this is going to be one of the most talked about topics in the SAPphire 2011. The event hosted by the global leader in enterprise software applications, will primarily touch on the topic of data analytics and the mobile and social future of SAP.

In his article, Roger Strukhoff makes good use of the hefty numbers in the Philippines as he noted: “About 85% of the country’s 90 million people have mobile phones, and my observation is that people swap out phones here the way most folks swap out ballpoint pens. The percentage of smartphones is estimated to hit 38% of the market by 2015. In other words, there could easily be 30 million smartphones in use here within a few years… The mobile web is on the verge of accelerating worldwide computing and bandwidth requirements to a degree unimaginable just a few years ago. Only Cloud Computing will be able to handle this growth.”

Even the medical field has touched on the idea of developing mobile applications to treat diseases with the aid of big data and analytics. Earlier this year, Massive Health raised $2.5 million in funds to support their initiative to pick up trends with the use of data of user’s behavior through mobile phones and build products that leverage big health dilemmas. A noSQL startup, Couchbase adapts Big Data for mobile devices and provides Apple iPhone developers and end-users up-to-date versions of their data.
As discussed by experts in SiliconANGLE.tv, data is the heartbeat of cloud, mobile and social sectors. With the massive exponentiation that happens in almost every blink of the eye, the role of Big Data in the mobile industry is becoming a stronger force than ever and drawing the much needed attention to its development and cultivation.
