Let’s Paint The Town Green: Consumer Techies Get Eco-Friendlier

Following the celebration of Earth Day, American consumers have shown tremendous support on campaigns that promote awareness and appreciation for Earth’s nature. Even the tech community is feeling the consumers’ growing interest on green-themed websites and electronics. In a recent study conducted by comScore Media Metrix, the month of April posted impressive numbers of Americans that visited the “green” category compared to 20 million last March. The top three in this category are: Shine Green (7.9 million), Planet Green (3.3 million) and Care2.com (2 million). Previous month’s leader is Planet Green.

Executive Vice President of comScore Media Metrix, Jeff Hackett further explains the results of the research saying, “More than 26 million Americans celebrated Earth Day this year by visiting green websites. With gas prices climbing past $4.00 a gallon, Americans have a greater incentive to be thinking green to provide some economic relief.”

Going green is no new business to the cloud, cloud services, electronics or to the tech community in general. A world-leader in software solutions, IBM’s supercomputers lead the GreenList 500 and keep its title as the largest manufacturer of green devices. The company has also pushed for solutions that will further push eco-friendly local administration.

Putting together tech savviness and nature-loving into one idea seemed to be inappropriate before recent times. Now, they dwell together to promote green technologies. Another industry giant, EMC has also tapped resources to gradually move toward the green direction. EMC and Cisco formed an alliance to create cloud-based, green data centers. Again, while these changes may seem very positive, cloud servicing companies should sit down and do some serious action planning on their quest to go green.

The pressure to go green is mounting. The question right now is: will the industry manage to face this big issues on going green?
