HP Aims to Bring Seamless Experience Across All Devices

From desktops to tablets, there is no shortage of end-user computing devices on the market and HP has its hand in just about each one.

Just today, in fact, HP released two new zero-clients, the HP t5335z and t5565z Smart Clients, as well as the HP 6360t Mobile Thin Client.

The goal for HP is to delivering a seamless experience across all devices, according to Jeff Groudan, Director of Marketing for HP’s Desktop and Thin Client Division.

“HP is in a unique position, an advantageous position because we have all the devices,” Groudan said live in theCube from the floor of Citrix Synergy 2011 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. “The trick, though, is how do you bring together the experience, an optimized experience across all those devices.”

Rather than loading them up with bloatware, end-users increasingly want to connect their devices to the web, to corporate servers, and to pubic and private clouds to access data and applications. Managing each experience and allowing end-users to move from device to device seamlessly is a complex challenge.

“The market for [thin clients] is exploding,” Groudan said. “From a commercial devices [perspective], our whole focus is on making the best devices that can connect to whatever you need to connect to.”

Connecting devices to each other is also a focus of Groudan’s group, he said. HP is committed to connecting devices “whether they’re connecting to each other through some proximity experience – like you walk up to your PC with a tablet and you can flip the app you were working on or the document you were working on to the other device – or you get that experience going through the cloud,” Groudan said.

“Whether you’re on your tablet, you’re on your phone, you’re on your PC, you’re on your thin client, you can access those documents from all those devices in a very consistent way,” Groudan explained. “That’s the vision” set forth by HP, from CEO Leo Apotheker on down, he said.

“It’s about connectivity,” Groudan said.

Improved performance is also key for thin client development, Groudan said, as users want to stream webcasts and videos, create and view PowerPoint presentations, and more on their devices.

Thin clients must continue getting more powerful, he said, and “that’s very specifically because instead of just a green-screen terminal application now you’re trying to replicate entire desktops in the cloud and stream down all of that experience locally.”
