Permabit Adds 4 New Patents to Existing Portfolio

OEM embedded data storage company Permabit announced on the company blog that it has been awarded four new patents by the US Patent and Trademark Office, adding up to a patent portfolio size of 23 in data deduplication, protection and archiving as well cloud storage.

“We have invested heavily in research and development over the years at Permabit and this has enabled us to provide a deduplication solution without equal in terms of performance, scalability and cost savings,” said Jered Floyd, Chief Technology Officer at Permabit.

US Patent No. 7,734,595 covers the use of a deduplicating storage repository to allow out-of-band communication between multiple users.  US Patent Nos. 7,747,583 and 7,930,315 cover retention of historical records in a data storage depository, and US Patent No. 7,912,855 covers a data storage repository that leverages deduplication to reduce bandwidth requirements using a digital fingerprint.

Permabit’s patent portfolio now covers a pretty broad spectrum of technologies, including hash–based deduplication for scalable file and object data storage, encrypted deduplication, and the use of data fingerprints.

The company is investing a lot in developing its products, and one of the most recent developments is the announcement of the next version of Albiero, its high performance data optimization software. This latest version features several new functionalities, including expanded support for Linux. Albiero got the no. 1 spot in terms of performance and return on investment in Wikibon’s Capacity Optimization Ratio Effectiveness or CORE report. The offering broke an industry record, performing at 77 GB/sec using 64 KB data blocks and hardware-based SHA-256 hashing in a 16 node grid configuration.

Alongside developing and optimizing new technologies, Permabit is also investing in growing its partner base. One of the latest companies to enter an OEM with Permabit is BlueArc, which is embedding Albiero into its upcoming solutions. These focus on high performance, scalability, data protection and other factors.
