Oracle Back in SAP’s Good Graces?

It’s a small world after all. Oracle and SAP are like oil and water—their molecular constituents at one point seemed to be made to hate each other’s.  Now, looks like the two companies cannot afford to avoid each other, be it along the good or bad road, as Oracle Exadata receives another certification from SAP applications. The certification is applicable to all products that are supported by NetWeaver 7.x and certified for Oracle database 11g Release 2.

In an official press release, Oracle provided an answer as to why its Exadata Database Machine an ideal optimization tool for companies using SAP, and what will be the main benefits for users: “The Oracle Exadata Database Machine combines both software and hardware in one unique box. All the database features and storage functionalities are integrated in a system rack (X2-2 and X2-8) and all the components and modules are designed to work together – or in other words: ‘Hardware and Software, Engineered to Work Together.’”

This is perhaps a very interesting scene, especially when the world is well aware of the exceptionally controversial Oracle vs SAP legal scuffle; the former demanding billions due to the alleged stealing of its TomorrowNow database. Between the two, Oracle perhaps is the bigger lawsuit magnet. Android is the centripetal force that drives the never-ending case Oracle now holds against Google. Apparently, the software company demands royalties that could be as much as 50% for the search engine giant’s phenomenal Android platform. The judges ordered further review of Oracle’s patents, whittling them down from 132 to just three. These infringement cases and lawsuits make Oracle somewhat of a bully in the tech community as they initialize almost all legal moves against mentioned companies.  Meanwhile, Oracle is on the defense side as HP sues the enterprise regarding the Itanium-based servers.

Legalities aside, companies that collide before the federal courts will have to meet and practice mutualism outside the halls of justice and inside their real IT world, for the industry and consumers’ sake.
