Live Blogging Dr. Werner Vogels, CTO, Amazon – The State of the Cloud Address

Dr. Werner Vogels gives his state of the cloud speech at GigaOm’s Structure 2011 conference.  Rather than tweet all content on the Twitter stream, I’ve added the live blogging notes.

Notes:

  • Cloud has nothing to do with technology, some tech pieces, but cloud is all defined by its benefits
  • Has to lower costs, more importantly has to increase agility (reduce TTM and remove constraints)…this is way more important
  • Cloud removes the heavy lifting of undifferentiated services
  • Cloud is foundation for 21st century architectures…using OTS components you can build higher quality apps that you couldn’t do before
  • Massive innovation in 2010…very close relationship with customers, small business units work closely with customer and relentless approach to improving service, immediate release of functions, no major launches
  • Moving away from picture of a stack, just a model, really outdated
  • Cloud is much more than services, it is a whole collection of pieces from many different ecosystems

o    Can no longer can be defined by strict layers, many apps pull services from all over the place and connect them together

  • 5 regions now, very important for fault tolerance

o    Have to use AZs to build survivable apps

  • Close to 339b objects in S3, just at the beginning of growth here, peak requests +200,000/second
  • Each day AWS adding as much capacity as Amazon.com the retailer needed in the year 2000
  • The AWS Mission

o    “Enable business and developers to use web services to build scalable, sophisticated applications”…5-6 yrs ago at launch

o    Sophisticated apps

§   Developers and businesses are building increasingly sophisticated apps in the cloud

§   Secure, scalable, reliable, fault tolerant, guaranteed performant and efficient

§   Early biz building highly fault tolerant apps…multiple AZ, DBs, load balancers

  • Not that complex but can survive whole range of failure scenarios

o    Chaos monkey

§   Randomly shoots some of other sw components, tests ability to survive continuous failures

§   Enables building of much more sophisticated apps

  • New tech services

o    Amazon RDS…customers wanted to be able to failover across AZs, have added multi-AZ deployments

  • Most enterprise world is buying instead of building

o    Both oracle and SAP certified sw for production on AWS cloud

o    Oracle eBusiness suite very simple, HA, solution on AWS w/o custom components

  • 11/10/10

o    On this date 100% of Amazon.com traffic was served out of AWS, from this point on all traffic from .com is served out of AWS

o    Required next gen of virtual private cloud software

  • 2011 priorities

o    Add more geos

o    Make it easier to build and manage apps on AWS

o    Release new DB offerings

o    Broaden support offerings

o    Add billing, user mgmt and identity
