Missing Lulzsec Already? Watch These Hacker-Inspired Movies

The hacker binge is still at large, even as the LulzSec witchunt lives on. But LulZec is possibly the one of the most notorious names in the business of hacking, even plotting attacks on government’s websites. To better prepare for the worst-case-scenarios LulzSec is primed to expose, organizations will need to reinforce their security arsenals to prevent breaches and the jeopardizing of their customers’ data.

LulzSec has become a summer blockbuster in its own right, but here’s some hacker-inspired movies to tide you over the rest of this season. This entertaining article by Wikibon talks about classic movies that are based on hacking and security breaches. Perhaps my generation can relate more to Tron, Enemy of the State, Swordfish, The Italian Job, Firewall, Die Hard 4 and The Matrix. All of these flicks tackle information ruptures, and the thrill of putting a network at great risk.

Following relentless efforts of authorities to crack down LulZec masterminds, some hacking groups somewhat retreated, but not completely. And even with a temporary withdrawal from the spotlight, the damage has already been done—many of these breaches are irreparable. It already shook consumers’ confidence and tech brands in scrutiny.

In this infographic, LulZec’s attacks seem syndicated and well-planned, with succeeding intrusion of the following websites in less than 3 months’ time: infragardatlanta.org, CIA website, pbs.org and PlayStation Network. In total, the Lulzec invasion compromised more than 77 million user accounts.

While using the concepts of these films as a starting point to discuss the trouble with hackers, they still remain a reminder of the corporate-guerilla struggle that resides with any seat of power. Funny, but sometimes the more bizarre the idea is, the more it fits the reality of today’s tech scene.
