Virtualization Grows with Virtustream Funding: Product Launches and New Investments

Coming off a partnership with VMware, virtualization startup Virtustream recently announced an additional investment of $10 million of Series B round financing to enhance its virtualization offerings. The company’s Series B funding comes from Intel Capital, Columbia Capital, Noro-Moseley Partners, and TDFunds. This brings Virtustream’s total funding to $59 million in equity capital.

In a statement Virtustream Chairman and CEO Rodney Rogers said “since our launch and initial funding in January of 2009, we have been heads down in the effort to deliver critical, first‐to‐market Enterprise Cloud technologies. We believe we have accomplished this with our xStream IaaS platform and its unique ‘Infrastructure Unit’ consumption‐based provisioning architecture. We have experienced great traction to date with our customers and felt now was the right time to invest further in our products, our markets, and in our brand awareness.”

The proceeds from this funding round will be mainly used to productize xStream into a distributable end “cloud O/S” software product. A part of the funding will also be used in branding, marketing and advertising of Virtustream’s products and services. The company expresses its intention in expanding its market presence to San Francisco and London.

On the other hand, adding to a long list of virtual desktop solutions products, Oracle has recently launched the Oracle Virtual Desktop Client App for Apple’s iPad. Users can download the app for free at the Apple’s App store or through iTunes for free. The virtualization app is managed by Oracle’s Sun Ray Software and Oracle Virtual Desktop infrastructure which enables iPad users to easily virtualize software and hardware data anywhere.

Citrix is upping its virtualization solutions as well.  One of the leading virtualization companies, Citrix has announced the availability of Xen Server 6.0 Beta (formerly “Project Boston”). The Linux-based virtual server has more simplified management infrastructure for Workload Balancing, StorageLink, and Site Recovery. It also includes HDX enhancements for optimized user experience.
