Mobile Wars Live On as Smartphones Thrive in Tablet-Anxious World

The never ending battle for the best smartphone and tablet seems like it’s just getting started, as more companies will soon release their own tablets and improved smartphones.  So what have these mobile giants been up to lately?  Let’s look at their recent feats.

Apple, the company that’s set the bar in terms of smartphone and tablet design, is said to release their iPhone5 on September, though they’re still fixing some bugs with their current issues with compromised iOS jailbreaks.  Though they’ve had snags in the past, iPhones and iPads still top consumer lists when asked which brand they prefer or would purchase.

But competitors are taking advantage of these recent glitches as Amazon, the company they’ve battled for digital books, digital music and apps, has another thing coming – Amazon will soon release its own tablet.  The specs of the tablet have not been fully unveiled, except that it will have an Android OS, but no camera.  The Amazon tablet is said to be released in the latter part of the year.

But on the brighter side of Apple, the California company won over HTC in their patent infringement battle.  Although the court favored Apple, HTC is not backing down and has vowed to make an appeal to the US trade panel.

“Now the course of action is to appeal,” HTC CFO Winston Yung said, going on to suggest that “we believe we have a very strong case, the attorney agrees with us, and therefore we will appeal,” the WSJ reports.

Though HTC will push for an appeal, their General Counsel Grace Lei has also stated that they are open for negotiations if Apple is willing to talk to them.

While Apple was busy with multiple court appearances, mobile companies took this opportunity to focus on their own products, without worrying about Apple too much.  Motorola will soon be releasing its Droid Bionic, which the company believes is ‘The One’ – the one that can reign over all the smartphones, even the yet-to-launch iPhone 5.  It boasts a 4.5-inch 540×960 pixels (qHD) TFT capacitive touchscreen display and comes with Android OS v2.3, and will have a 1 GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU Apple A5 chipset processor.  Comparisons to the iPhone 5 seem meaningless, since Apple hasn’t even officially announced when these will be released, but considering the mobile ecosystem as a whole, there’s sure to be a battle as the steady stream of smartphones flows ceaselessly.

Sony Ericson has also been busy with the incorporation of Google Android in their devices.  Aside from their Xperia, which was relatively well received, they’ve recently unveiled two tablets to compete in the market, the S1 and the S2.  Aside from running on the Android OS, it also boasts of the NVIDIA Tegra 2 system on a chip (SoC) that been, according to Sony, optimized to provide a faster user experience.  These two tablets do not look like your typical tablets.  The S1 is thicker at the top so when placed on a flat surface, it lies on an angle which allows for the perfect view.  While the S2 is only 5.5 inches, it can have a 10-inch display screen if preferrer.  How, you say?  You see, the S2 is like a clam-shell that can be closed, meaning it’s more portable and won’t take up too much space when not in use.

If you’re wondering why RIM hasn’t released a new BlackBerry since November of last year, well here it is: in the next few months starting in August, RIM will be releasing seven new smartphones.  They took their sweet time in developing the BlackBerry 7 – an operating system that builds on BlackBerry 6 with added features such as 3D gaming with motion-sensing, and augmented reality capabilities.

Technology is an industry of constant as change, and the mobile wars will not be over soon.  You can expect better devices in the future, and I can bet that in less than a year, the smartphone or tablet that you are currently using, you’ll replace, because eventually something far better will get your attention.
