Infographic: How Far Has E-commerce Come, and Where Will it Go Next?

With the rise of flash sites, daily deals, mobile retail and personal recommendations, e-commerce has really taken off in the past few years.  So let’s talk about a little bit about the history of online shopping, and its impact, as outlined by this infographic (below).  It goes way back, having been first developed Michael Aldrich in 1979 by connecting a TV set with a telephone line to a real-time transaction processing computer.  And from there, it gave birth to a whole new world of shopping in cyber space.

From 1979 to the present, online shopping has grown tremendously due to its convenience, eliminating the need to make unnecessary trips to the store just to buy one item, and even cutting your gas expenses.  Studies have shown that e-commerce sales grow 10% every year, meaning more people are getting into online shopping.  eBay is proof, showing significant gains in their second quarter fiscal year, resulting in a $2.8 billion revenue – 25% more than their revenue during the same period last year.

With almost every product now available for purchase online, e-commerce is sure to continue to increase.  And maybe it will in turn decreases traffic jams and air pollution as less people will be going out to shop.  E-commerce may be the answer to global warming!
