LulzSec Protests Hacker Arrest, Authorities Fan the Flames

Details surrounding the alleged capture of famed hacker Topiary as announced today will continue to emerge in the days to come. The announcement is curious however in this analyst’s opinion as the nature of the notorious group is one of a unified cause. That cause has been clear in LulzSec’s releases from the very beginning and culminate in a recent joint statement  with Anonymous directed at the FBI:

“Your threats to arrest us are meaningless to us as you cannot arrest an idea,”

The announcement of the arrest is likely to get an unwelcome rise from the Antisec and Anonymous communities in addition to the remaining members of LulzSec.

“Any attempt to do so will make your citizens more angry until they will roar in one gigantic choir. It is our mission to help these people and there is nothing—absolutely nothing—you can possibly to do make us stop.”

You can bet that Anonymous/LulzSec will be back with more significant attacks in the very near future.  Take for example a recent compromise of Walmart data that was uploaded to Pastebin in an intrusion act by a hacker known as “The Script Kiddies”. Clearly tied to the #AntiSec movement, the leak reads:

“Walmart data Leak by 5CR1PT K1DD135 AntiSec

(……..)

Hello Interwebs,
Find enclosed, the download link for our Walmart data. Enjoy! Also, support #AntiSec

So the culture of attack and disclosure persists amongst those in alignment with the movement and it is quite obvious that these acts will continue to hit the news and be significant targets.  What LulzSec has unleashed will likely endure and extend beyond the arrest of any one member, regardless of how prominent they may be.  Reports indicate that Topiary is the spokesperson for the group, meaning further investigation will continue. In the meantime, expect that more attacks will be coming. The summer of security compromises, or even the year of compromises are not over by a long shot.
