VMware Ups vRAM Limit to Distract from vSphere High Prices
While everyone is still dilly-dallying over the recent price augmentation of VMware products, customers now have a reason to celebrate. VMware is reminded of the value of customer satisfaction, having boosted the limited vRAM allotment from 30% to 100%, following the vSphere 5 launch.
A good portion of the announcement was read on ZDNet:
“Nonetheless, these changes have generated a great deal of discussion and debate in the blogosphere, across the VMware communities, and in direct conversations with customers and partners. Some of the discussion has reflected confusion about technical terms and the exact nature of the changes. Other comments are more specific to customer and partner use cases and future planning.
“In all instances, we have been watching the commentaries on the blogs very carefully, and we have been listening to customers very intently. We have collected a huge amount of feedback about the impact of the new licensing model on every possible use case and scenario.”
VMware implemented three crucial updates in their vSphere licensing model:
- Increase in vRAM entitlements for all versions of vSphere
- Plug the amount of vRAM at any given VM so it would not cost more than one vSphere Enterprise Plus license
- Adjust system to increase adaptability around transient workloads and periodical spikes which are commonly observed in test and development environments
While VMware is threatened by the potential of OpenStack as a cheaper alternative, the enterprise continues to soar. A week earlier, the global leader in virtualization hosted the White House Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. Attendees include several big names in the employment sector. VMware was responsible in presenting the schemes and concepts on how innovation will drive economic growth. A book focused on designing VMware vSphere implementations “VMware vSphere Design” was released to support in deciding and choosing what the correct infrastructure for your environment.
Responding adequately to customer’s concerns and feedback are very essential components of building business and progressing the organization to a certain, higher standard. Monetization through licensing is VMware’s bet to beef up their billion-dollar company. VMware’s efforts in trying to appeal the very reasons of their success says a lot about their commitment to deliver service, even the prices seemed to hit the ceiling.
