Astute Networks Boosts I/O for VMware Environments

The VMware-focused virtualization environment could get a big lift at VMworld 2011 with Astute Network’s ViSX G3 accelerator, which would provide with 1500 percent, enhanced read performance on critical applications.  The startup, Astute Networks, uses flash memory for accelerating VMware virtualized environments. Today comes news of the addition of single Astute ViSX G3 appliance to boosts VMware I/O performance by 1,500 percent.

The Astute ViSX G3 appliance adds more than 80,000 read performance per second to VMware virtualized environments, which is equivalent to adding hundreds of enterprise hard drives.  The appliance is designed to use for critical applications that require higher I/O demands, such as databases, ERP, e-mail, and SharePoint.

Speaking on the appliance performance, Jay Kramer, vice president of market for Astute, said, “The ViSX G3 is the first solution to solve the critical problem of virtual stall called by performance bottlenecks in virtualized environments. We let customers dial in the performance they need and where they need it by assigning IOPS to each virtual machine, as well as set the SLA for their virtualized environment.” He said “multiple appliances can be added to the network, each adding the same extra performance. We’re unlocking the performance of VMware environments.”

The ViSX G3 made of 12 flash memory modules and Astute’s own 10-core DataPump Engine processor to provide accelerated network performance, virtualized iSCSI proficiency, Flash performance, and RAID protection.

“The storage industry is responding by adding Flash based storage device in several different forms, such as internal PCI Flash modules for servers, external Flash devices to serve as direct-attach storage, and SAN based Flash” said Omar Barraza, Astute’s director of product marketing and product management. “We don’t just add cache to increase performance; we actually host the virtual machines. Customers can Vmotion their VMs to the ViSX G3, which removes them from the host server which will as a result enjoy a boost in performance.” said Barraza.

ViSX G3 will be available in three models, starting at $29,000 for 1.2 TB model, $59,000 for 2.4 TB and $94,000 for 4.8 TB model. EMC, HP and Fusion-IO are some other industry’s big name that offer flash storage memory products, though Fusion-io is a pivotal aspect of the ongoing shift in this industry.

Cloud computing, virtualization and VMworld Services Ecosystems are some major areas that will highlight the trends and the future of virtualization along with cloud computing at VMworld 2011 this month.  Astute Networks announcement today on adding ViSX G3 accelerator to VMware virtualized environments is an example as to how VMware is adding more portfolios to its Services Ecosystems and on storage virtualization.

In another industry development, Nirvanix, a top provider of cloud storage services, stated that it will showcase cloud-based snaps and clones for VMware files and feature at VMworld 2011. In a promotional offer to test drive its cloud storage services, the company will present 1TB of free storage for 30 days to the VMworld attendees.
