DirecTV and Sony Brings NFL to the PlayStation 3

DirecTV is a direct broadcast service provider based in California and it is one of the largest satellite-television providers that transmits digital satellite television and audio to many households in the United States, Latin America, and the Anglophone Caribbean. In short, it’s the ultimate TV entertainment experience the way you want it.

DirecTV just announced their partnership with Sony Corporation and their intent to enable PlayStation 3 users to stream sports events. This partnership aims to bring NFL Sunday Ticket right to your Sony device, and especially to those viewers who are unable to receive satellite in their region.

This may be the first step to give viewers access to out of market NFL games through Internet connected devices.

“If this test is successful, we have the opportunity to distribute ‘Sunday Ticket’ through various different devices, and we’re certainly open to relationships with other consoles and Internet-connected devices,” Alex Kaplan, senior director of sports marketing and product strategy for DirecTV, said in a telephone interview.

The partnership between Sony and DirecTV shall feature live coverage of up to 14 NFL games every Sunday. Also, the NFL Sunday Ticket-To-Go service lets DirecTV subscribers able to watch their favorite NFL game live through streaming on a PC and other mobile platforms such as the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Blackberry, Android phones and  tablets, Motorola Xoom, and Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Just this month, Comcast has withdrawn its lawsuit against DirecTV accusing the latter’s NFL Sunday Ticket Ads of being misleading.  So, not only mobile phone companies are into these lawsuits–which I think is already becoming a trend.

Videostreaming today is getting popular and is becoming more significant just like our mobile devices.  Earlier this year, it was reported how mobile video gets premium update and how companies such as HBO and Netflix as they go head-to head.  On the other hand, Hulu went to auction last month wherein DirecTV was one of the potential buyers.

In order to enjoy DirecTV through your Sony PS 3,  the charge for an entire season shall be $339.95 for those who have no account yet with DirecTV. Meanwhile, for those who already have DirecTV, only a $50 charge shall be paid by the user for the access on the gaming machine.  In addition to the NFL Sunday ticket access on PS 3, DirecTV has also announced its collaboration with Sony and NFL.com to bring Fantasy Football  functionally to the television screen.

This partnership and collaboration would hopefully empower again the gaming console and would help bring back Sony’s declining revenue.
