Google earlier acquired Slide, which made social games and apps for iOS and Android devices, just about a year ago for about $200 million.  And now, they’ve decided to shut it down and Max Levchin, founder of Slide and PayPal will also be leaving, as told by sources to All Things D.  The news has since been confirmed by Google.

“Max has decided to leave Slide and Google to pursue other opportunities, and we wish him the best,” said a Google spokesperson. “Most of the team from Slide will remain at Google to work on other opportunities.”

As Levchin departs Slide and Google, most of his teams will stay behind, and will likely become a part of the YouTube team.  Jared Fliesler, a project head at Slide, will also be leaving to join former Slide colleague Keith Rabois at mobile payments start-up Square.

Slide was run independently from Google when it was acquired, and they continued creating apps such as Disco, Pool Party, Video Inbox and the recently-launched Photovine.  Unfortunately, most of these apps and services failed to catch on.  They had high hopes for Slide becoming a part of the social unit but Google+ already has a games tab, so Slide will be of little use there.  Aside from that, because they were independent, most of the apps they released competed with Google, many being released for iOS first or iOS only, and not on Android.  They released a blog post informing the public of the future of Slide, their apps and user data.

“We wanted to give you all advance notice that in the coming months, a number of Slide’s products and applications will be retired. This includes Slide’s products such as Slideshow and SuperPoke! Pets, as well as more recent products such as Photovine, Video Inbox and Pool Party. We created products with the goal of providing a fun way for people to connect, communicate and share. While we are incredibly grateful to our users and for all of the wonderful feedback over the years, many of these products are no longer as active or haven’t caught on as we originally hoped.”

Only one Slide app will remain, Prizes.org, a platform that brings solution to everyday tasks by turning problems or tasks into a contest.

The Photovine team must feel really awful right now–they just launched a new mobile app and now it will be terminated, just like that.  Google doesn’t seem too broken up about it.  They’ve furthered their own photo-sharing efforts, launched the Panoramio Group around Google Maps.

As for Levchin, there is current no news as to where he might possibly seek greener pastures.
