While investors and the media focused much of its attention on HP’s decision to get out of the PC and mobile computing business, the company’s storage division is “going great guns,” according to one executive.
Speaking to Wikibon Chief Analyst Dave Vellante and SiliconANGLE.com Founder John Furrier live inside theCube at VMworld 2011 in Las Vegas, HP Storage Senior Vice President and General Manager David Scott said that both HP’s 3PAR and StoreOnce divisions achieved triple-digit growth last quarter (video clip below).
He expects high growth rates to continue as HP delivers on its “storage without boundaries” strategy, he said.
“Back in the summer we introduced the HP converged storage strategy called storage without boundaries,” Scott said. “We made that a reality last week with the introduction of HP Peer Motion, a storage federation technology that allows you to have transparent data mobility between either lots of 3PAR systems or lots of LeftHand systems so you can do transparent workload balancing, lifecycle asset management, improve your utilization efficiency in thin provisioning at the data center or metropolitan level.”
Scott said 3PAR is enjoying such significant growth as a result of access to HP’s channel program. HP acquired 3PAR, where Scott was CEO, a year ago.
“The channel is becoming very excited about the HP converged storage strategy, the opportunity to make money, and so we’re starting to see a lot of interest from people that may be hesitant about buying 20 year old storage architectures from EMC,” Scott said.
Even with all of the innovation, however, HP is committed to supporting its more “conservative storage customers” by optimizing their existing traditional IT environment that is based on established platforms from HP, Scott said. “At the same time, we’re building out these new generation storage solutions for virtualization, cloud, what we call Big-everything data environments with LeftHand, 3PAR and iBrix.”
“Our customers can have both best solutions in the old world as well as great solutions for the new cloud world and we tie it all together with a set of converged systems solutions that we announced recently,” Scott told Vellante and Furrier. “We think we have some of the best intellectual property in the storage industry right now.”
