Samsung Unveils Three New Devices at IFA

During Samsung’s keynote speech at the IFA tech conference in Berlin today, the company introduced what it is calling a new category of products, slotted between pocketable smartphones and not-so-pocketable tablets. Leading this new category is the Galaxy Note, which features an enormous, 5.3-inch display and believe it or not, a stylus.

Samsung says the new Galaxy Note has the largest size screen that is still as portable as a smartphone. The Note has the world’s largest Super AMOLED display, at 5.3 inches, and it features an HD, WXGA (1280 x 800 pixels) resolution. Powering that massive screen is a dual-core, 1.4GHz processor, and either 16GB or 32GB of internal storage. The Note has an 8 megapixel rear camera with autofocus and LED flash, and a 2 megapixel front-facing shooter. The rear camera is capable of recording 1080p HD (1920 x 1080 pixel) video.

Meanwhile, the Samsung Wave 3 will be a new model in the Wave series of smartphones, which run on Samsung’s own Bada operating system. In fact, Samsung’s intentions of launching a Bada 2.0 device are also somewhat apparent, given the fact that the company has recently released the Bada 2.0 SDK for developer. The Wave 3 is powered by a 1.4 GHz processor. It sports a 4-inch VGA Super AMOLED screen is an upgrade from LCD that is used in the older Wave II handsets. Though the 5-megapixel camera is the same, you will be happy to know that it has 3GB of internal memory for your immediate use. Also like the previous Wave II, you can further expand your storage capacity via microSD slot by adding an extra 32GB storage. All of these features are enclosed in a 9.9 mm metal case for protection from breakage.

The Galaxy Tab 7.7 could be the refresh to the original Galaxy Tab, and if the rumors surrounding the device are to be believed, it will be a 7” Android tablet (much like its predecessor) that will be sporting a 7” Super AMOLED display and most likely updated hardware as well, and we can only hope that it will come loaded with Android Honeycomb 3.2.

Moreover, the Japanese electronics maker, Sony announced on Wednesday that it will begin shipping two Android tablets — the company’s first — starting in September. The first model will be the Tablet S, a fairly conventional 9.4-inch tablet that will run on Android 3.1 which is upgradeable to 3.2 later this year. The Tablet S is Wi-Fi only and costs $499 for the 16 gigabyte model and $599 for the 32 gigabyte model. It will be pre-sold starting Wednesday with delivery expected later in September.

The other tablet in Sony’s table is the Tablet P, which is considerably more interesting. Like a Nintendo DS, the Tablet P is a dual-screen device that folds like a clamshell. When closed, the Tablet P resembles a large sunglasses case. When opened, two 5.5-inch displays are revealed. The Sony Tablet P will have a Tegra 2 processor under the hood, spreading dual-core loving’ throughout the device, which will also have 512MB of RAM. As we noted earlier, Android 3.2 will be running the show. 4GB of storage come out of the box along with an included 2GB microSD card.

Meanwhile, The HTC JetStream is the first tablet device to support AT&T’s yet-to-be-launched Long Term Evolution 4G network. The device will have a combo LTE/HSPA+ cellular data radio, making it the only piece of computing hardware to work on both AT&T’s 4G and 3G networks. The JetStream goes on sale September 4 for $699.99 with a two-year contract.

HTC Jetstream is AT&T’s first tablet to showcase the Android 3.1 OS.  The brand new operating system was designed from the ground up for devices with larger screens.  It improves on Android favorites with new interactive and resizable widgets, plus improved multi-tasking, browsing, notifications, and customization.  The new version of the platform also features Google Maps 5.0 with 3D-like interaction, access to over three million Google eBooks, incognito mode for browsing internet with no history tracking, and Google Talk with video chat over Wi-Fi.
