Sony Wows At IFA 2011

The 2011 IFA is underway in Berlin, Germany and will run until the 7th.  Companies are already geared up for this “talent show” and Sony, a day ahead of 2011 IFA, has already granted a sneak peak of the products they will displaying at the event.

At the top of the list are its two debut tablets, the Sony S and Sony P.   Both tablets run an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, have front-facing VGA cameras and a 5-megapixel camera on the back, full-size SD card slot, Micro-USB sync, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR wireless, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi.  Powered by Android 3.1 Honeycomb, both are also PlayStation-certified, which means users can legally download games in the Sony PlayStation Network.  The sony S & P come in unique designs, as the S tablet comes in a tapered shape while the P tablet is foldable, making it one of the most portable tablets yet.

And speaking of Android-powered devices, they’ve also unveiled the Android-powered Walkman prototype, which is “designed for music lovers by music lovers.”  Sony is going back to its roots by making the Walkman once again an iconic brand.  The music player has a large 4.3-inch screen with a resolution of 800 x 640 pixels, and non-reflective LCD technology that improves image quality by removing the air gap between the LCD and the outer screen, a W.Button dedicated for quick access of music controls, the W.Music app to manage music, and the S-Master Mix Suite to improve audio quality.  It can show graphic visualizations as the music plays and allows access to Sony’s Cloud-based music service, Music Unlimited.  Price and the release date of the device has yet to be announced.

Sony will also be launching their new e-reader, the Sony PRS-T1, which is the lightest and most stylish e-reader.  It’s encased in a black, white or burgundy-red plastic.  It has a 6” screen capable of multitouch functions and easy navigation, it’s Wi-Fi ready so you can download from the Sony Reader Store, and it comes with a stylus so users can easily write down notes on the pages, an appeal for students.

The new Sony VAIO S-series of laptops is something that consumers are excited about, as it boasts of new features like a 1080p display, a built-in HD webcam and second-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors.  The 15-inch laptop is less than an inch thick, made of lightweight aluminum and magnesium materials, and weighs about 4.4 pounds.  It also comes with the new AMD Radeon HD 6630 Hybrid graphics card, sporting 1GB of VRAM.  The new Sony VAIO S-series price starts at $1,000 and will start selling by mid-October.

And finally, Sony is appealing to people who enjoy watching movies or playing games by themselves with the launch of the HMZ personal 3-D viewer, which is a head-mounted display that provides a 3-D theater of music videos, movies and games that kind of resembles the flopped-Nintendo Virtual Boy that was released in the ‘90s.  The HMZ personal 3-D viewer will sell for $800 and will probably be launched in time for the holidays in the US and European market.  Though this gadget may appeal to kids, it is not recommended to be used by people aged 15 years old and below as experts believe that their brains are not yet fully developed and use of such gadgets can impair brain development.

Outside of the IFA event, with Japan’s move to protect their companies from the rising yen and other Asian competitors, Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba have entered a joint venture with Innovation Network Corporation of Japan, a government-backed investment company, in which the three companies have agreed to merge their small and medium-size display businesses. INCJ will be the largest shareholder of the joint venture.
