Mozy Gets New Speedy, Backup Features

Mozy, EMC’s cloud backup service for enterprises, got an upgrade today.  The first is a 100X improvement in file scanning capacity, according to the company. This “dramatically” decreases the time it takes to complete the initial backup process, and this is supplemented by the second and more major new addition to MozyPro.

EMC unveiled what it calls the Mozy Data Shuttle service, a feature that copies an encrypted version of customers’ files and data securely to the company’s datacenters.  It also introduced an increase in capacity:

“With Mozy’s improved file scanning capabilities, businesses with servers can now back up millions of files and move terabytes (TB) of data to the cloud faster than ever before by using the new Mozy Data Shuttle service.”

The new service puts a big emphasis on security, which is a big factor in the cloud (and also because EMC needs to regain some of the credibility it lost after the RSA breach). It is ISO 27001 certified and SAS 70 Type II audited, and double-encrypts a dataset before beaming it over to EMC’s datacenters.  A randomly generated key or a personal key, as well as a one-time- use ‘Data Shuttle key’ are also needed for someone to be able to access that dataset.  This update is designed for SMB customers, as well as larger enterprises.

The storage industry is growing as companies have increasing amounts of data to process and store, and EMC is taking a more direct approach by expanding in that area as well. It’s been expanding its Hadoop offering, and  recently launched two new products: the Greenplum Analytics Workbench, an enterprise-scale Hadoop testing system, and  EMC Greenplum Modular Data Computing Appliance, two-socket Xeon 5600 servers powered by the open-source PostgreSQL DB. The latter offering comes in 3 edition.
