Is Google Analytics Real-Time Update a Big Data Blunder?

Google Analytics just pushed through two updates.  First, to keep up with the massive rush of data plus the never ending change happening on the web, John Jersin of the Google Analytics Team announced the launch of Google Analytics Real-Time, which is a set of new reports that show what’s happening on your site as it happens.  It’s an important step for Google to make given the direction real-time and big data trends are headed, and Google’s been finding different areas to apply real-time capabilities, including a big search update several months back.  Google’s not the first in this game, but it’s going to have to tack on real-time to everything it can in order to remain competitive and prove a leader in this area.

The new Real-Time offering measures the immediate impact of social media on your site and it makes sure campaign tracking is correctly implemented before launching one.  The feature is slowly being rolled to users, but Jersin says that the feature will be available to everyone using the new version of Google Analytics.  The feature comes from Google’s acquisition of Canadian start-up real-time analytics firm PostRank back in June.

But rival Clicky is unimpressed with the new feature, saying it’s not really “real-time” but only one data released at the moment.  “This isn’t ‘real-time Google Analytics,’ this is a single report in GA that is real time,” Clicky wrote. “The rest of GA remains the same. This is more akin to Chartbeat, to be used as a real-time compliment to a standard analytics package, rather than a full standalone real-time service like Clicky is.”

The second update is the new Google Analytics Premium, which is basically the paid version of Google Analytics.  In general, Google Analytics is used by small and big web site owners, and owners of personal blogs to large enterprises whose products and services are used daily.  But some customers informed Google Analytics that they have needs that the current Google Analytics doesn’t address.  Google Analytics teamed up with Gucci, Travelocity, TransUnion, eHarmony and others on the Premium feature, all based on more data, advanced tools, dedicated support and guarantees.

Google Analytics Premium is available for $150,000 fixed annual fee in the United States, Canada, and the UK. You can get it directly from Google Analytics or through Google Analytics Premium Authorized Resellers.
