Tango Celebrates 1st Birthday With a PC App

Tango is best known as a mobile app that makes video call possible between iOS and Android devices, and it’s come a long way since their launch in September of last year.  Though their service wasn’t perfect, they quickly gained a huge number or people using their free service.

Last July, they raised $42 million in a series B funding led by Draper Fisher Jurvetson, the same VC firm that first invested in Skype, to expand their service to PCs and increase their 60-men workforce.  And to celebrate their first anniversary, they launched their Windows PC app.

“Our ability to develop Tango for personal computers, while continuing to ensure that Tango is available on more than 450 mobile devices within our first year, is a testament to the dedication and efforts of our team in the U.S. and China,” said Uri Raz, Tango’s co-founder and CEO.

“Introducing Tango for the PC has been the number one request by our users, and with 1.5 billion PCs in use worldwide today it’s a platform we wanted to embrace. We’ve doubled our usage since June and introducing Tango for the PC will accelerate our growth.”

From the original 25 employees composed mainly of engineers, that number grew to 60 by July and now, Tango has 85 employees in US and China.  Also, when they started, most of their audience was iOS users at 80% but with the dominance of Android smartphones and tablets, Apple’s number decreased to 35%.

The best thing about the service is that when someone calls you, all of these devices ring and you have the freedom to choose which device you’d like to use to answer the call.

“Last year we hit the ground running and pushed the limits of what could be done on mobile,” said Eric Setton, cofounder and CTO of Tango. “We lead the market on mobile and will continue this lead based on new partnerships paired with our aggressive product roadmap. We’ve delivered on virality and growth, quality, hiring, and coverage of devices and platforms, and the next 12 months will focus on monetization.”

The launch comes after a rather active week from Skype, which updated its iOS, Mac and Android apps.  Video chats are becoming more prevalent as technology supports this form of instant messaging, providing a wide avenue for the likes of Tango to push its initiative of cross-device and cross-platform communications.
