Adobe Goes Mobile With Touch Suite And WoodWing

At the Max Technology conference, Adobe announced some important aspects towards their aim for mobile and cloud services. It’s an important focus for Adobe as the mobile sector extends several new opportunities for the software maker to really build a strong foundation for the future of the mobile industry.

Yesterday Adobe acquired Nitobi Software, which makes PhoneGap and PhoneGap build an open source platform that creates cross-platform mobile applications with HTML5 and JavaScript, widely used in building applications for devices based on Android, iOS, BlackBerry and other operating systems.  The acquisition, aside from getting a mobile edge, also strengthens Adobe’s grasp on HTML5.

It’s an important development for the developer community in particular, as Appcelerator notes in its analysis of the deal, which highlights the differences in PhoneGap and Adobe’s approach to the mobile sector.  Appcelerator, a developer platform that’s rather keen on HTML5 adoption, says “In the end, all of this is good news for web developers, who now have solid alternatives to proprietary operating systems that lock developers into specific OSes. We congratulate Nitobi for demonstrating the power that’s possible from the open web model.”

Adobe’s new Touch Suite

Adobe is reaching out to the mobile generation as they just announced a new mobile suite, which will allow users to do graphical work on tablets.  The Adobe Touch suite features six apps: Adobe Photoshop Touch which lets users quickly combine images, apply professional effects, share the results with friends and family through social networking sites like Facebook etc.; Adobe Debut lets users elegantly present select Adobe Creative Suite designs to clients and colleagues virtually anywhere with confidence and complete control; Adobe Proto lets users create interactive wireframes and prototypes of websites and mobile apps on your tablet, communicate and share ideas with teams and clients using a touch-based interface; Adobe Collage lets you capture and refine concepts by combining inspirational images, drawings, text, and files from select Adobe Creative Suite components into modern, conceptual moodboards, upload your files to Adobe Creative Cloud to refine later or share with others; Adobe Ideas is the ideal touch app for your favorite Adobe Creative Suite software, it allows users to design almost anywhere using vectors, layers, and color themes, and then easily access the results for finishing in Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop; and Adobe Kuler, an extension of the full Adobe Kuler service, enables users to generate color themes that can inspire any design project, create, explore, download, and save color themes wherever you are inspired, experiment with themes and discover inspiration in a vibrant online color community.  The six apps in the Adobe Touch suite are initially available for Android Honeycomb tablets at $9.99.  An iOS version of the apps will soon be available though no specific date and price has been announced.

Another mobile achievement for Adobe is their partnership with WoodWing Software, which the latter announced today.  The agreement integrates the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite into the WoodWing Enterprise Publishing System to solely resell the Enterprise and Professional Editions of Adobe Digital Publishing Suite as a Value Added Reseller.

“WoodWing has been at the forefront of Tablet Publishing since early 2010,” Erik Schut, President of WoodWing Software explains.

“As there were no other solutions available on the market at that time, WoodWing decided to develop an end-to-end solution to help publishers quickly take advantage of this new opportunity. Today, Adobe has an extensive solution to publish content onto Tablets. This is the right time for WoodWing to fully focus on its core activities, which is to streamline and optimize the editorial workflow. For the publishing, distribution and optimization of tablet content, we are going to rely on Adobe Digital Publishing Suite.”
