Microsoft has been busy this month with a wide variety of deals ranging from patching Windows, to closing an $8.5 billion acquisition.

The October Patch Tuesday fixes include several significant ones, including partially a rumored update to the Malicious Software Removal Tool which will prevent Microsoft Security Essentials and Forefront from flagging Chrome as malicious software. In addition, Microsoft released Service Pack 3 for Office 2007 and SharePoint 2007 on the day it released the details about the patch.

“Microsoft will release eight security bulletins, of which two are rated “critical,” according to the Microsoft Security Bulletin Advance Notification issued Oct. 6. The remaining important bulletins address flaws in Forefront Unified Access Gateway, Host Integration Server as well as some versions of Windows.”

One of the critical bulletins notes a loophole in Windows and IE that allows hackers to upload code remotely, and the second is a bug fix to .NET and Silverlight meant to prevent remote code execution in both frameworks.  A similar bug was patches back in June, according to the company.

As Microsoft deals with OS patches, the company continues to expand in other areas. Microsoft finalized the $8.5 billion acquisition of VoID giant Skype after finally getting approval from the EU. Microsoft got the green light from the FCC already. The company argued that the merger has no affect on the competition in this market due to several other prominent players such as FaceTime.

The software giant had some clashes with the EU before, including the time when the latter said it would ban Windows from Europe should Microsoft continue to preinstall IE with every copy of the OS.

And on the entertainment side, Microsoft also introduced a content streaming feature that will be released for the Xbox 360. It already managed to sign up over 40 providers including YouTube and Vevo, HBO, and BBC.
