AT&T Exceeds Expectations with 5 New Android Phones, Free Apps

AT&T shows just how much they love the Android platform, and the growing pool of Android-powered devices.  Earlier this year, AT&T announced that they plan on releasing 12 Android smartphones, but they’re ahead of the game as the year ends, with a total of 19 Android smartphones, with plans for more devices to follow.

The five devices are the Motorola ATRIX 2, which combines “extreme power” with “life of the party” capabilities, boasting of 1 GHz dual-core processor, 8 GB ROM, 1 GB RAM and a 2 GB microSD card (expandable to 32GB).  It runs on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), and has a 4.3-inch qHD screen 960x540TFT, with more than 500,000 pixels for sharper and clearer display.  There’s also an 8 MP camera with LED flash, another front-facing camera, and support for 1080p HD video capture.

The Samsung Captivate Glide  is the other 4G Android smartphone in the bunch, that keeps you moving with a thin, side-slide QWERTY keyboard and a powerful 1 GHz dual core processor, Android 2.3, access to 4G speeds.   It also has a 4” Super AMOLED screen, 8-megapixel flash camera with HD (1080p) video recording, a front-facing camera for video chat and enhanced Exchange ActiveSync support for IT.

The Samsung DoubleTime, on the other hands, features a compact design, dual touch screen with a full flip keyboard, Android 2.2, full touch 4″ SVGA display, 5 MP camera with flash and HD video recording, available in white and pink color scheme, voice recognition, a dedicated function key for shortcuts, drag-and-drop widgets, five scrolling home screens and an expandable menu with scrolling panels.

Then there’s the Pantech Pocket and the AT&T Avail, the second Android smartphone launched by GoPhone, AT&T’s pre-paid offering.  This device features a 3.5-inch touch screen, 5- megapixel camera and runs on Android 2.3 OS, 3.5-inch capacitive touch screen, 5 MP autofocus camera and video recorder, and seven customizable homescreens.

AT&T is also releasing two apps, the Mobile Accessibility and the Toggle.  The Mobile Accessibility app aims to reach out to customers with visual disabilities, either partial or total blindness, so they can enjoy doing the same common wireless tasks that Android users do.

“AT&T has long been committed to offering wireless products and services that are usable and beneficial to as many people as possible,” said Carlton Hill, vice president, Consumer Devices, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “As the first wireless carrier worldwide to offer Mobile Accessibility Lite, we are thrilled to make Android accessible to all of our customers.”

AT&T Mobile Accessibility Lite features a suite of 11 accessible apps–Phone, Contacts, SMS, Alarm, Calendar, Email, Web, Where Am I, Apps, Music Player and Settings. Each is designed to be intuitive and easy to use for the blind and visually impaired customer.

AT&T is enhancing Android devices for the business sector as well.  Enterproid, the company who recently received funding from Google, Qualcomm and Comcast, will run the service Toggle which will securely run enterprise apps on Android devices.

Users with Toggle will see two different personas on their Android phones.  One features enterprise-grade email, calendar, contacts and messaging apps and a browser, all of which can securely access corporate data while the other one is the open Android platform, where users can download and use any app they please.   A company’s IT staff will be able to manage which employees have access to which company resources, remotely delete or add business applications to the devices, and remotely wipe corporate data stored on the phone.

“While everyone is excited about the latest smart phone, its capabilities pose a growing problem in the way video is consumed by employees,” said Ray Hood, CEO of Qumu. “At Qumu we provide the opportunity for employers to better control the way video is organized and distributed to employees. Not only can the Enterprise manage the growing volume of videos being created and viewed by its workforce, they can also monitor when employees have watched important videos and whether or not they watched the complete program.”
