Fandroids are excited about the Android 4.0 (a.k.a. Ice Cream Sandwich) as it boasts more than a few awesome features. But the burning question is: When will the new OS be available and when will Fandroids get the OS on their devices?
Devices That Will Get ICS
Motorola Mobility announced via their Twitter account that six weeks after the OS officially launches, they will release the update for their devices.
“We’ll be releasing devices for ICS 6 weeks after Google releases the final version of it” – @Motorola
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the first one to get the OS as it was launched on the mobile device. Other devices rumored to get the OS after the Galaxy Nexus are the DROID RAZR, the DROID Bionic, the Xoom, and the Nexus S.
HTC Germany posted a list of devices that will get the ICS update. The list includes: HTC Sensation (XL,XE,Original), HTC EVO 3D, HTC Incredible S, HTC Desire HD, HTC Flyer, HTC Rhyme, HTC Desire S, HTC Salsa, HTC Desire Z, and Google Nexus One.
On the tablet side, aside from the Xoom, Asus also made an announcement on their Facebook Page as to which of their tablets would get the yummy OS.
“Google recently announced the latest update for Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, which brings some exciting new features and capabilities. At ASUS, we pride ourselves on delivering a great experience with our products, thanks to frequent updates that further enhance our products’ capabilities. We’re delighted to confirm support for Ice Cream Sandwich on the ASUS Eee Pad Family – our aim is to bring the latest Android update to the Eee Pad Series, but at this time we are unable to set a date for its release. Please stay tuned for more news on our Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade plans.”
As for Acer, the Iconia Tab A100 / A101 and Iconia Tab A500 / A501 will get the ICS early next year.
According to tablet-online.pl, “Acer Poland told us That Ice Cream Sandwich Android update for Acer A500/A501 and A100/A101 Iconia Tab should appear around January 2012. It may be one of the first update on the market for Android tablets.” Acer has yet to announce an official statement regarding the ICS.
Android 5.0 – Jelly Bean
Though the ICS hasn’t officially launched and Fandroids have yet to experience what it offers, some are already looking to the future iterations of Android. Though the ICS features sound great, people aren’t so easily contented. It seems we always want more. So here are the features that people want on the Android 5.0 Jelly Bean as outlined by Planet Android: a full Chrome browser, a file manager, more keyboards, a clear Upgrade Path, Android 5.0 Lite, user interface on/off toggles, Power Efficiency options, theme options, widgets on the lock screen, and a faster OS.
It seems the mobile world can’t improve fast enough. There’s growing anticipation around Android 4.0 and its subsequent devices, even as the holiday season nears. The list of supported smartphones and tablets will undoubtedly grow in the coming weeks, expanding ICS’s accessibility across the board, in true Android style.
